Route

How to reach Chennai from Bengaluru by road

Via Hosur, Krishnagiri, Vellore & Kanchipuram (NH44)

The direct and most-used route runs south on NH44 through Hosur, Krishnagiri, Vellore and Kanchipuram before entering Chennai. It is a well-maintained multi-lane highway for most of the stretch, making it the default choice for this corridor.

Via Krishnagiri and Arakkonam (alternative)

An alternative bypasses central Vellore via a Krishnagiri–Arakkonam link, occasionally used to skip city traffic in Vellore, though the difference in overall time is generally small.

This is a well-travelled business corridor, so leaving Bengaluru by mid-morning still gets you into Chennai comfortably by evening. NH44 is largely multi-lane and fast, though traffic builds noticeably as you approach both city limits.

Fuel and food stops are frequent along the entire route, so there is no need to plan refuelling in advance. Chennai’s inner-city traffic can add significant time near the destination, so build in a buffer if you have a fixed arrival deadline.

Season

Best time to visit Chennai

October to February is the most comfortable window, with mild temperatures making the highway drive and any Chennai sightseeing pleasant. This corridor is used year-round for business travel regardless of season.

Summer (March–June) turns hot on the plains stretch through Krishnagiri and Vellore, so keep the air conditioning running and carry water. The October–December northeast monsoon can bring heavy rain closer to Chennai, so check forecasts before travelling in that period.

Tips

Travel tips for a Chennai road trip

  • A sedan is fully adequate for a business trip or small family; larger groups may prefer an Ertiga or Innova Crysta.
  • This route is often booked one-way for business travel — confirm pickup and drop points clearly in advance.
  • Keep a buffer for Chennai’s inner-city traffic, which can add well beyond the highway travel time.
  • FASTag covers NH44 tolls; keep some cash as backup for any gaps.
  • Network coverage is reliable for virtually the entire drive.
  • If detouring to Vellore or Kanchipuram, factor in extra time and confirm this with your driver beforehand.
  • Carry ID proof if you plan to visit any temple or fort premises requiring entry checks.
  • Book ahead during festival periods, when both Vellore and Kanchipuram see heavier local traffic.
