Route

How to reach Coonoor from Bengaluru by road

Via Mysuru, Bandipur, Mudumalai & Ooty

Follow NH275 to Mysuru, then Nanjangud and Gundlupet before entering Bandipur Tiger Reserve. The road continues through Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu, climbs the Nilgiris ghat into Ooty, and then descends a further stretch through tea estates to reach Coonoor. This is the route BLR Cabs uses for both Ooty and Coonoor trips.

Via Sathyamangalam and Mettupalayam (alternative)

A longer alternative runs through Sathyamangalam and Mettupalayam, climbing the Nilgiris from the Coimbatore side directly to Coonoor without passing through Ooty first. It is occasionally used when the Bandipur–Mudumalai stretch has restrictions, but adds distance.

Because Coonoor sits beyond Ooty, plan for a longer day than a straight Ooty trip. Leave Bengaluru by 5.30–6 am to clear the Bandipur–Mudumalai forest stretch in daylight, since this corridor has a night driving restriction typically covering roughly 9 pm to 6 am.

The final stretch from Ooty to Coonoor winds through tea gardens and is narrower in places than the main ghat road, so keep speeds modest. Refuel in Mysuru or Gundlupet before the forest sections, as fuel stops become sparse through Bandipur, Mudumalai and the upper Nilgiris.

Season

Best time to visit Coonoor

October to June suits Coonoor well, similar to Ooty. Post-monsoon and winter months bring the clearest views over the tea estates and valleys, while the mild summer keeps Coonoor cooler than the plains even at peak season.

The June–September monsoon brings heavy rain and mist that can obscure viewpoints and slow the ghat drive. Many travellers pair Coonoor with Ooty on the same trip, splitting nights between the two hill towns for variety.

Tips

Travel tips for a Coonoor road trip

  • A sedan works well for couples; families and small groups are more comfortable in an Ertiga or Innova Crysta given the winding roads.
  • Carry motion-sickness medication for the ghat sections between Ooty and Coonoor.
  • Pack a light jacket — Coonoor and Ooty both turn cool in the evenings, even outside winter.
  • Use FASTag for tolls on the highway stretch; keep some cash handy as backup.
  • Expect brief network gaps inside the Bandipur–Mudumalai forest corridor.
  • Book ahead for long weekends, since Coonoor and Ooty share the same seasonal demand spikes.
  • Follow posted speed limits and no-stopping rules through both tiger reserves.
  • If combining Coonoor with Ooty, plan which town to base yourself in first to minimise backtracking.
