Route

How to reach Ooty from Bengaluru by road

Via Mysuru, Bandipur & Mudumalai (recommended)

Take NH275 out of Bengaluru through Mandya to Mysuru, then continue via Nanjangud and Gundlupet. From Gundlupet the road enters Bandipur Tiger Reserve, crosses into Tamil Nadu at Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, and climbs the Nilgiris ghat section with its famous hairpin bends up to Ooty. This is the shortest and most scenic option, and the one BLR Cabs uses by default.

Via Sathyamangalam (alternative)

An alternative runs through Bengaluru, Kanakapura or Mysuru, then Sathyamangalam and Mettupalayam before climbing to Ooty via Coonoor. It avoids some of the Bandipur forest stretch but adds distance and time, and is mainly used when the direct forest road is closed for wildlife reasons.

Leave Bengaluru by 5.30–6 am so you clear Mysuru and Gundlupet before the Bandipur–Mudumalai forest stretch gets busy. This corridor has a night traffic restriction, commonly enforced roughly between 9 pm and 6 am, so build your schedule to cross it well within daylight hours rather than risk being turned back at a checkpost.

The Nilgiris ghat climbing into Ooty has dozens of hairpin bends — drive slowly, use lower gears on the descent and keep a safe distance from buses and lorries. Fuel up fully in Mysuru or Gundlupet since options thin out through the forest sections, and carry snacks and water as the ghat drive itself can take well over an hour.

Season

Best time to visit Ooty

October to June is the most reliable window for an Ooty road trip. Post-monsoon months bring clear skies and green hillsides, while winter (December–February) is crisp and sometimes cold enough for a light jacket to be genuinely useful, especially at Doddabetta.

The July–September southwest monsoon brings heavy rain, fog and occasional landslide risk on the ghat sections, which can slow the drive considerably. Summer (March–May) is pleasant in the hills even as Bengaluru and the plains heat up, making Ooty a popular hot-weather escape.

    Day 2 — Ooty sightseeing

Cover Doddabetta Peak, the Rose Garden, Ooty Lake boating and the toy train station at your own pace. Those with extra time can add a short drive to Coonoor for its tea estates and viewpoints before returning to Ooty for the night.

  3. 3

Tips

Travel tips for a Ooty road trip

  • A sedan is comfortable for couples or small families; larger groups are better off in an Ertiga, Innova Crysta or Tempo Traveller for luggage room on the ghat sections.
  • The winding ghat road can trigger motion sickness — keep motion-sickness medication handy and ask for a front-row seat if needed.
  • Carry a light woollen layer, even outside peak winter, as evenings in Ooty and Coonoor turn cool quickly.
  • FASTag covers most tolls on the highway stretch; keep some cash as a backup in case of gaps.
  • Network coverage can drop briefly inside the Bandipur–Mudumalai forest stretch — download offline maps beforehand.
  • Book your cab a few days ahead for long weekends and the April–June season, when Nilgiris demand peaks.
  • Respect posted speed limits and no-stopping rules inside the tiger reserves; fines and delays are common for violations.
  • If travelling with young children or elderly passengers, plan a mid-route break near Mysuru or Gundlupet before the ghat climb.
