Route

How to reach Hampi from Bengaluru by road

Main route via Chitradurga and Hospete

Bengaluru → Tumakuru → Chitradurga → Hospete → Hampi is the standard route, running largely on NH48 and NH50 before the final short stretch into Hampi from Hospete. Hospete has the widest choice of hotels and is a common base for exploring the ruins.

Alternative via Chikkanayakanahalli

A slightly different state-highway alignment passes through Chikkanayakanahalli and Huliyar, useful when NH48 has heavy traffic near Chitradurga, though the difference in time is generally small.

Combining with Badami or Goa

Hampi sits within reach of Badami’s cave temples to the north and on a feasible route toward Goa, so longer trips sometimes combine two of these into a single multi-day heritage-and-beach itinerary.

A 6–7 am start from Bengaluru gets you to Hampi with enough daylight for at least a first look at the ruins on arrival day. The route to Chitradurga and Hospete runs on well-maintained highway, so the drive itself is relatively easy compared to the ghat routes on Karnataka’s coast.

Carry water and sun protection, since Hampi’s open, rocky terrain gets hot even outside peak summer, and shade is limited around many of the monuments. Fuel up at Chitradurga or Hospete, and plan sightseeing for early morning or late afternoon to avoid the harshest midday sun.

Season

Best time to visit Hampi

October to February is the most comfortable window, with cooler daytime temperatures suited to walking between the scattered temple complexes and climbing viewpoints like Matanga Hill. This is also the busiest season for visitors, so early starts help you beat both the heat and the crowds at popular sites.

March to May turns Hampi very hot, with little shade across the ruins, making outdoor sightseeing best confined to early morning and late afternoon. The monsoon (June–September) is comparatively quieter with occasional rain, and the surrounding landscape turns greener, though some unpaved paths can get muddy.

Itinerary

Suggested Hampi itinerary

  1. 1

Day 1 — Bengaluru to Hampi

Leave early via Chitradurga, arriving in Hospete or Hampi by early afternoon. Check in, then spend the late afternoon at the Virupaksha Temple and the riverside area, finishing with sunset from Matanga Hill or Hemakuta Hill.

  2. 2

Day 2 — Vittala Temple and the ruins circuit

Spend the morning covering the Vittala Temple complex and the royal enclosure, ideally by auto-rickshaw or bicycle within the site given the distances between monuments. Start the drive back to Bengaluru by early afternoon via the same route, reaching home by night.

  3. 3

Optional extension — Badami or Goa

With an extra day or two, the trip can extend north to Badami’s cave temples or further to Goa, since Hampi sits reasonably en route to both.
