Bangalore to Goa Road Trip Guide: Route, Stops & Itinerary
Goa remains one of the most popular long-distance drives from Bengaluru, combining a full day on the highway with beaches, Portuguese-era heritage and a relaxed pace once you arrive.
How to reach Goa from Bengaluru by road
Main route via Hubballi and Dharwad (NH48)
Bengaluru → Tumakuru → Chitradurga → Ranebennur → Hubballi → Dharwad → Belagavi → Goa runs mostly on NH48, the best-maintained option for this distance. The road is largely four-lane through Karnataka before narrowing closer to the Goa border, with plenty of towns for fuel and food breaks.
Alternative via Hospet and Belagavi
Travellers combining Goa with Hampi sometimes route via Hospet before rejoining NH48 near Belagavi, adding a heritage stop to the journey at the cost of extra distance.
Entering Goa from the north (Belagavi–Anmod Ghat)
The final stretch into Goa from Belagavi crosses the Anmod Ghat through forested terrain in the Western Ghats before descending toward Panaji or North Goa, with a Karnataka–Goa checkpost along the way.

Leaving Bengaluru by 5 am is advisable given the distance; the NH48 stretch to Hubballi moves quickly on good road, so most of the early hours are covered fast. Fuel up around Chitradurga or Hubballi, and plan a proper lunch break around Belagavi before the final ghat crossing into Goa.
The Anmod Ghat stretch near the Goa border has curves and should be driven attentively rather than at speed, especially after dark; arriving before dusk is preferable. Since this is an interstate trip, carry vehicle documents for the checkpost, and budget extra time for the crossing during peak season weekends.
Best time to visit Goa
October to March is Goa’s peak season, with dry, sunny days ideal for the beaches and a lively atmosphere across North and South Goa, though this also means higher demand for accommodation and busier roads on approach. Booking stays well in advance is worth it for this window, especially over Christmas and New Year.
The monsoon (June–September) turns Goa lush and quiet, with rough seas making swimming unsafe but a noticeably different, calmer character to the state. Summer (April–May) is hot and humid, generally the least comfortable time for a beach holiday, though it does see fewer crowds.
| Season | Months | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Winter | Oct–Feb | Peak season: best weather, busiest |
| Summer | Mar–May | Hot, humid; fewer crowds |
| Monsoon | Jun–Sep | Lush and quiet; rough sea, avoid swimming |

Places to stop on the way to Goa
Chitradurga
A well-placed breakfast halt on NH48 with its hilltop fort visible from the highway.
Hubballi–Dharwad
A major twin-city stop with a wide choice of restaurants and fuel stations, roughly two-thirds of the way to Goa.
Belagavi
A good lunch stop close to the Maharashtra and Goa borders, with the last major services before the Anmod Ghat crossing.
Anmod Ghat
A forested ghat section marking the descent into Goa, with a checkpost where basic vehicle documents may be verified.
Panaji and the beaches
North Goa’s beaches (Calangute, Baga, Anjuna) suit a livelier stay, while South Goa (Colva, Palolem) offers quieter stretches — pick a base area before booking your stay.

Travel tips for a Goa road trip
- An Ertiga or Innova Crysta suits families and groups better than a sedan for this long a drive; larger groups can consider a tempo traveller.
- Goa trips involve an interstate crossing — permit charges are payable at actuals and are separate from the per-km fare.
- Keep FASTag topped up for NH48 tolls, with cash as a backup for the state border area.
- Carry vehicle and identity documents for the Karnataka–Goa checkpost.
- Network coverage is generally good along NH48, with only brief gaps near the Anmod Ghat.
- Book accommodation well ahead for the October–March season, especially over long weekends and the year-end period.
- Dress codes apply at some churches and temples in Goa; carry a light cover-up for such visits.
- Split the return drive over two days if the group includes children or elders, rather than pushing straight through.
