Route

How to reach Gokarna from Bengaluru by road

Main route via Hubballi (recommended)

This is the fastest and best-surfaced option: Bengaluru → Tumakuru → Chitradurga → Ranebennur → Hubballi → Ankola → Kumta → Gokarna. Most of the route runs on NH48 up to Hubballi before turning west toward the coast. It passes through several district towns with fuel stations and eateries, so stops are easy to plan through the day.

Alternative via Shivamogga and Sirsi

A greener but slower alternative runs Bengaluru → Tumakuru → Shivamogga → Sagar → Sirsi → Gokarna, cutting through the Western Ghats with forest stretches near Sirsi. It adds travel time and has narrower ghat roads, so it suits travellers who want scenery over speed rather than the shortest transit.

Combining with Murudeshwar or Udupi

Since Gokarna sits on the same coastal stretch as Murudeshwar and Udupi, many travellers extend the trip north or south along the coast for a longer multi-town holiday, using Gokarna as either the first or last stop.

  • Drive time

    Detail
    9–10 hours
  • Suggested trip length

    Detail
    2 days

Start from Bengaluru by 5–6 am to reach Gokarna by evening with reasonable breaks; the drive is long and mostly straightforward highway until you turn off toward the coast near Ankola. City exit through Tumakuru Road or NH48 clears traffic fastest before 7 am. Keep fuel topped up around Chitradurga or Hubballi since options thin out closer to the coast.

The final stretch from Kumta to Gokarna runs through narrower coastal roads with occasional market traffic in small towns — drive gently through these sections. Night driving on this route is not recommended given the distance; plan to arrive before dark, and keep a filled tank plus water and snacks for the last two hours when facilities are sparser.

Season

Best time to visit Gokarna

October to March offers the most pleasant weather for Gokarna, with dry days, calm seas suited to beach walks, and comfortable evenings by the shore. This is also when the temple town sees the most footfall, including around major festivals, so booking stays ahead of long weekends helps.

The monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rain and rough seas along this coast, making beach visits and swimming unsafe, though the greenery en route through the Ghats looks striking if you are prepared for wet roads. Summer (April–May) is hot and humid near the coast, better suited to early-morning beach time than midday sightseeing.

Tips

Travel tips for a Gokarna road trip

  • A sedan is comfortable for couples or small families; groups of five or more will find an Ertiga or Innova Crysta more practical for the long drive.
  • Carry motion-sickness medication if anyone in the group is sensitive, particularly for the Ghats alternative route.
  • Dress modestly at the Mahabaleshwar Temple; footwear needs to be removed before entering.
  • Keep FASTag topped up for tolls on NH48; carry some cash as a backup.
  • Network coverage can dip in short stretches near Sirsi and along the final coastal approach — download offline maps in advance.
  • Book beach-facing stays well ahead for weekends and the Shivaratri period, when the temple town gets busy.
  • Carry sunscreen and light cotton clothing even in winter, since coastal afternoons stay warm.
  • Avoid swimming at unmanned beaches after dark or during rough-sea days.
