Bangalore to Murudeshwar Road Trip Guide: Route, Stops & Itinerary
Murudeshwar’s giant beachfront Shiva statue and gentle bay make it one of the most photogenic coastal stops on Karnataka’s northern shoreline.
How to reach Murudeshwar from Bengaluru by road
Main route via Tumkur and Shivamogga
Bengaluru → Tumakuru → Shivamogga → Hosanagara → Murudeshwar is the standard route, running largely on state highways through Shivamogga district before descending toward the coast. Shivamogga makes a natural halfway break with fuel, food and rest-stop options.
Alternative via Hubballi and Kumta
Travellers coming from a longer northern loop sometimes approach Murudeshwar via Hubballi and the coastal road through Kumta and Bhatkal, useful if combining the trip with Gokarna on the same itinerary.
Coastal extension to Udupi or Gokarna
Murudeshwar sits roughly midway between Gokarna and Udupi along the coast, so many itineraries treat it as a stopover on a longer north-Karnataka coastal circuit rather than a standalone destination.

Leave Bengaluru early, by 5–6 am, to comfortably reach Murudeshwar in daylight. The stretch to Shivamogga runs on decent state highway with regular towns for breaks; from there, the road narrows through forested and hilly terrain before opening up near the coast. Fuel up well before Shivamogga since options reduce afterward.
The final approach into Murudeshwar has short ghat-like sections with tight curves — drive cautiously, especially after rain. Night driving on this stretch is best avoided given limited lighting in places; plan to arrive before dusk, and keep water, snacks and a charged phone handy for the last leg.
Best time to visit Murudeshwar
October to March is ideal, with dry, breezy weather that suits both the temple-statue complex and beach time. Clear skies also make the views from the statue’s viewing gallery and the nearby hill more rewarding. Weekends in this window can get busy with pilgrim and tourist traffic together.
Summer (April–May) turns hot and humid near the coast, better suited to early mornings and evenings than midday visits. The monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rain and a rough sea, making the beach unsuitable for swimming, though the statue complex remains open and less crowded.

Places to stop on the way to Murudeshwar
Tumakuru
A quick early-morning stop for fuel or a snack shortly after leaving Bengaluru, marking the start of the state-highway stretch.
Shivamogga
A natural halfway halt with a good spread of restaurants and fuel stations, and a base if you also plan to visit Jog Falls nearby.
Hosanagara
A smaller town on the descent toward the coast, useful for a short break before the final ghat-like stretch into Murudeshwar.
Murudeshwar Shiva statue and temple
The centrepiece of the town — a towering Shiva statue by the sea with a raja gopura and a hilltop viewpoint reached by lift, best visited in the golden-hour light.
Murudeshwar beach
A calm, sheltered beach right below the temple complex, good for an evening walk and photographs of the statue against the sea.
Suggested Murudeshwar itinerary
- 1
Day 1 — Bengaluru to Murudeshwar
Depart early via Tumakuru, taking a breakfast break around Shivamogga. Continue through Hosanagara toward the coast, arriving in Murudeshwar by evening. Visit the Shiva statue complex for sunset and take a walk along the beach before dinner.
- 2
Day 2 — Statue complex and return
Spend the morning exploring the temple, the hilltop viewpoint and the beach at a relaxed pace before the light gets too harsh. Begin the drive back toward Bengaluru by midday via the same route, planning for arrival late in the evening, or split the return over two days if travelling with children or elders.
- 3
Optional extension — Jog Falls or Gokarna
Since Shivamogga is en route, travellers with an extra day often detour to Jog Falls before or after Murudeshwar, or continue south along the coast to Gokarna for a longer combined trip.

Travel tips for a Murudeshwar road trip
- A sedan works well for couples or small families; larger groups will be more comfortable in an Ertiga or Innova Crysta given the long drive.
- Wear comfortable footwear for the walk up to the statue’s viewing gallery.
- Dress modestly within the temple complex; some areas require footwear to be removed.
- Keep FASTag active for highway tolls, with cash as backup.
- Expect patchy network coverage on the ghat-like stretch near Hosanagara.
- Book accommodation ahead for weekends, since rooms near the statue complex fill up quickly.
- Carry drinking water and snacks for the final coastal stretch where options are limited.
- If combining with Jog Falls, plan the detour via Shivamogga rather than backtracking from the coast.
