Bangalore to Jog Falls Road Trip Guide: Route, Stops & Itinerary
Jog Falls is one of India’s most striking waterfalls, best appreciated with an overnight trip that allows time for both the falls and the Malnad countryside around Shivamogga.
How to reach Jog Falls from Bengaluru by road
Main route via Tumkur and Shivamogga
Bengaluru → Tumakuru → Shivamogga → Sagar → Jog Falls is the standard route, running on state highways through Shivamogga district before the final approach through Sagar taluk. Shivamogga is a natural break point roughly two-thirds of the way there.
Alternative via Chikmagalur
Travellers combining a hill-station stop sometimes route via Chikmagalur and Shivamogga, adding scenic coffee-country driving at the cost of extra time compared to the direct Tumkur route.
Extending to Murudeshwar
Since Murudeshwar is roughly two hours further from Shivamogga, many travellers combine both destinations into a single multi-day trip rather than visiting Jog Falls alone.

Leave Bengaluru by 5–6 am to reach Jog Falls with good daylight for both driving and viewing the falls. The stretch to Shivamogga is straightforward highway; from there, the road narrows through Sagar taluk with hilly, forested terrain. Fuel up in Shivamogga since options reduce closer to the falls.
Roads near Sagar can be affected by heavy monsoon rain, which is also when the falls are at their fullest, so drive cautiously and check conditions if travelling between July and September. Night driving on the final stretch is best avoided given limited lighting; carry water and snacks for the last hour, where facilities thin out.
Best time to visit Jog Falls
July to September is when Jog Falls is at its most dramatic, with the Sharavathi river in full flow, though this coincides with heavy rain and the most challenging driving conditions on the approach roads. Visitors in this window should expect a wet, slippery viewing area and plan for slower travel.
October to March offers easier, drier driving and a pleasant Malnad climate, though the falls carry noticeably less water outside the monsoon since flow is also regulated by the upstream dam. Many travellers choose this season for driving comfort even though the falls themselves are less powerful.
| Season | Months | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Monsoon | Jul–Sep | Falls at their fullest; wet roads |
| Winter | Oct–Feb | Best driving; falls flow reduced |
| Summer | Mar–Jun | Hot; falls often reduced to a trickle |

Travel tips for a Jog Falls road trip
- A sedan is fine for couples or small families; groups will find an Ertiga or Innova Crysta more comfortable for the longer drive.
- Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear if walking down toward the base of the falls, especially in the monsoon.
- Check the falls’ water release schedule locally, since flow can be regulated by the upstream dam outside monsoon season.
- Keep FASTag topped up for highway tolls, with cash as backup.
- Expect patchy network coverage near Sagar and around the falls.
- Book accommodation in Shivamogga or Sagar ahead of monsoon weekends, when the falls draw the largest crowds.
- Carry a light raincoat or poncho if visiting during the monsoon.
- If extending to Murudeshwar, plan the detour via Shivamogga rather than a separate trip.
