Bangalore to Kochi Road Trip Guide: Route, Stops & Itinerary
Kochi combines a long but straightforward highway drive with the reward of Fort Kochi’s harbour, backwaters and colonial charm.
How to reach Kochi from Bengaluru by road
Via Salem, Coimbatore and Palakkad (main route)
From Bengaluru, take NH44 to Hosur, Krishnagiri and Salem, then continue on NH544 to Coimbatore. From there, NH966 crosses the Palakkad gap into Kerala, running through Palakkad town before continuing towards Thrissur and on to Kochi.
Via Erode as an alternative through Tamil Nadu
Some drivers route via Erode instead of a direct Salem–Coimbatore run, particularly when starting later in the day, rejoining the main highway before Coimbatore. It adds modest distance but can ease congestion around Salem during peak hours.

Given the length of this drive, leave Bengaluru by 4–5 am if attempting it in one day, or plan an overnight halt around Coimbatore or Palakkad to split the journey comfortably. The route is largely flat, well-surfaced national highway with steady traffic through Tamil Nadu.
Fuel and food options are plentiful along NH44 and NH544, so stops are easy to plan. Once past Palakkad the road remains good into Kerala, though town sections near Thrissur can slow you down during the day — factor this into your timing.
Best time to visit Kochi
October to February brings cooler, drier weather for this long highway drive, with comfortable daytime temperatures for the stretch through Tamil Nadu and Kerala. This is also when Kochi’s harbour-front areas are most pleasant to explore on arrival.
March to May turns warm across the plains sections of the route, while the monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rain in Kerala; the highway remains driveable but visibility and speeds are reduced, so build in extra time.
| Season | Months | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Winter | Oct–Feb | Best — cool, dry, comfortable long-haul driving |
| Summer | Mar–May | Warm on the plains — start early to beat the heat |
| Monsoon | Jun–Sep | Heavy Kerala rain — allow extra driving time |
