Route

How to reach Munnar from Bengaluru by road

Via Salem and Coimbatore (main route)

From Bengaluru, take NH44 south towards Hosur and Krishnagiri, then continue to Salem and Coimbatore. From Coimbatore, head to Udumalpet and begin the climb towards Munnar through tea estates and winding ghat roads — this is the standard, most-used route.

Via Coimbatore and Top Station

A scenic variant from Coimbatore approaches Munnar via Marayoor and Top Station instead of Udumalpet directly, adding some distance but offering striking valley views — worth it if you have flexible time and prefer a quieter approach road.

This is a long haul, so leave Bengaluru by 5 am to reach Coimbatore for a late lunch and begin the ghat climb in daylight. The stretch to Salem and Coimbatore is smooth national highway; the final approach into Munnar is narrow and winding with frequent hairpin bends.

Avoid driving the ghat section after dark — visibility drops and the road has limited lighting. Fuel up well before Udumalpet, as stations become sparse once you start climbing, and carry snacks and water for the final two to three hours.

Season

Best time to visit Munnar

September to May is the most comfortable window, with clear skies for the tea-garden views and stable ghat road conditions. Peak season (December–January) brings cooler temperatures but heavier tourist traffic on the approach roads.

The southwest monsoon (June–August) drenches the Western Ghats and can bring landslide risk and reduced visibility on the climb — travel is possible but should be planned with flexibility and caution during this period.

Tips

Travel tips for a Munnar road trip

  • An SUV or MUV is more comfortable than a sedan for the ghat roads and estate approach lanes.
  • This is an interstate trip; Kerala entry permit is arranged and paid at actuals.
  • Carry motion-sickness remedies — the final ghat stretch has continuous hairpin bends.
  • Book estate stays and viewpoint entries in advance during peak winter season.
  • FASTag covers most tolls, but keep some cash as a backup on state roads.
  • Mobile network can be inconsistent on the ghat sections — inform your stay of your arrival time in advance.
  • Pack a light jacket even outside peak winter; Munnar stays cool through the year.
  • Given the distance, book your cab a few days ahead, especially over long weekends.
