Route

How to reach Coorg from Bengaluru by road

Via Mysore & Kushalnagar (recommended)

The most-used route runs from Bengaluru via Ramanagara, Channapatna, Mandya and Srirangapatna to Mysore, then on to Hunsur, Kushalnagar and Madikeri. It is entirely on well-maintained state and national highway stretches until the final ghat approach into Madikeri, and lets you break the journey at Srirangapatna or Mysore.

Via Kanakapura & Kollegal (alternative)

A quieter alternative runs through Kanakapura, Malavalli and Kollegal before joining the Mysore–Madikeri road near Hunsur. It avoids Mysore city traffic but is a narrower road with more two-wheeler and local traffic near the smaller towns, so it suits travellers already familiar with the stretch.

Final approach into Coorg

From Kushalnagar the road climbs steadily through coffee-estate country to Madikeri and onward to Virajpet, Napoklu or Kabbinakad depending on your stay. These stretches are two-lane, winding and often misty in the evenings, so plan to arrive before dark wherever possible.

Drive time

Leave Bengaluru by 6–7 am to clear the city before peak traffic and reach Mysore in time for a relaxed breakfast stop. The Bengaluru–Mysuru stretch is a fast, wide road, so most of the distance is covered in the first half of the drive, leaving the slower ghat sections for daylight hours.

The last hour into Madikeri and onward to your homestay or resort involves narrow, winding roads with limited street lighting, so night driving on unfamiliar estate roads is best avoided. Keep fuel topped up at Mysore or Kushalnagar, as options thin out once you leave the highway.

Season

Best time to visit Coorg

October to March is the most comfortable window for a Coorg trip, with cool mornings, clear skies and estates in bloom or fruiting depending on the month. This is also the busiest season, so book stays and cabs ahead for weekends and holidays.

The monsoon (June–September) turns Coorg lush and dramatic with waterfalls at their fullest, but expect heavy rain, slippery ghat roads and some landslide-prone stretches near Madikeri. Summer (April–May) is warmer and drier, still workable for a shorter trip but less scenic than winter.

Tips

Travel tips for a Coorg road trip

  • A sedan is comfortable for up to 4 with luggage; groups of 5–6 are better off in an Ertiga or Innova Crysta.
  • Carry motion-sickness medication if anyone in your group is prone to it — the last stretch into Madikeri has continuous curves.
  • Estate roads can have patchy mobile network, so download offline maps and share your stay location with family in advance.
  • FASTag works on the highway sections; keep some cash handy for smaller toll points if any.
  • Book homestays and resorts well ahead for weekends between November and January.
  • Light woollens are useful for early mornings and evenings even outside peak winter.
  • Confirm elephant camp or estate-visit timings in advance, as some close by late afternoon.
