Route

How to reach Chikmagalur from Bengaluru by road

Via Nelamangala, Hassan & Belur (recommended)

This is the standard route out of Bengaluru — Nelamangala, Kunigal, Channarayapatna, Hassan and Belur before turning off to Chikmagalur town. It stays on wide highway for most of the distance, with the last stretch through coffee-estate country being narrower and more scenic.

Via Tumakuru & Tiptur (alternative)

A slightly longer but often less congested option runs through Tumakuru, Tiptur and Arsikere before rejoining near Hassan. It avoids some of the local traffic around Channarayapatna and is worth considering on a Friday evening departure.

Belur–Halebidu detour

If you have time, turn off near Hassan to visit the Chennakeshava and Hoysaleswara temples at Belur and Halebidu before continuing to Chikmagalur — it adds roughly an hour but is one of Karnataka’s finest heritage detours.

    Detail
    2 days

An early start from Bengaluru, by 6–7 am, gets you past the city and through Hassan in time for lunch, leaving the afternoon free for a relaxed drive into the estates and check-in before evening. The highway stretch to Hassan is fast; the final approach into Chikmagalur is hillier and narrower.

Coffee-estate roads around Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri are winding with limited lighting after dark, so plan sightseeing drives for daylight. Fuel up at Hassan or Chikmagalur town, as options are sparse once you head into the estate roads.

Season

Best time to visit Chikmagalur

October to February is ideal, with cool weather, clear views from Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri, and coffee estates in various stages of harvest. This is peak season, so weekend stays fill up quickly.

March to May is warmer but still manageable for trekking early in the day. The monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rain and mist that can close some viewpoint roads temporarily, so check conditions if travelling then.

Tips

Travel tips for a Chikmagalur road trip

  • A sedan suits up to 4 travellers; larger groups are more comfortable in an Ertiga or Innova Crysta given the winding estate roads.
  • Wear proper trekking shoes for Mullayanagiri or Baba Budangiri — the trails can be rocky and slippery after rain.
  • Network coverage thins out in the deeper estate areas, so download offline maps beforehand.
  • Keep FASTag topped up for highway tolls; carry some cash as backup.
  • Book coffee-estate homestays well in advance for weekends in peak winter season.
  • Start viewpoint drives early morning for clearer skies before afternoon haze sets in.
  • Combine the Belur–Halebidu detour on the way in rather than the way back to keep your return trip shorter.
