Bangalore to Madurai Road Trip Guide: Route, Stops & Itinerary
Madurai is one of Tamil Nadu’s great temple cities, reached from Bengaluru by a long but direct NH44 run through Salem and Dindigul.
How to reach Madurai from Bengaluru by road
Via Hosur, Salem & Dindigul (NH44)
The direct route runs on NH44 through Hosur, Krishnagiri, Salem and Dindigul before reaching Madurai. This is a straightforward, mostly flat highway drive with no major ghat sections, making it steady rather than scenic.
Via Karur (alternative)
An alternative from Salem routes through Karur before rejoining the main road to Madurai, occasionally used to spread out traffic on the Dindigul stretch, though it adds a little distance.

Given the 8–9 hour distance, leave Bengaluru by 5–5.30 am to reach Madurai comfortably before evening darshan hours. The drive is almost entirely highway, so the main effort is simply managing a long day behind the wheel.
Fuel and food stops are frequent along NH44 through Salem and Dindigul, so there is little need to plan refuelling in advance. If arriving specifically for temple darshan, check Meenakshi Amman Temple’s opening and closing hours in advance so your arrival time lines up.
Best time to visit Madurai
October to March is the most comfortable season, with milder temperatures making both the drive and any time spent around the temple more pleasant. The Chithirai Festival in April is a major draw despite the heat, and is worth planning around if festival timing appeals.
Summer (April–June) gets very hot on the plains through Salem and Dindigul, so travel early or late in the day where possible. The monsoon brings occasional rain but rarely disrupts this largely flat highway route.
| Season | Months | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Winter | Oct–Feb | Mild, comfortable for temple visits |
| Summer | Mar–Jun | Very hot, plan early starts |
| Monsoon | Jun–Sep | Occasional rain, road largely unaffected |

Travel tips for a Madurai road trip
- A sedan works for a straight temple visit; groups combining Madurai with Rameswaram will want an Innova Crysta or Tempo Traveller.
- Dress conservatively for temple visits — modest clothing is expected at Meenakshi Amman Temple.
- Given the 8–9 hour drive, plan a genuine rest day around the temple rather than adding more driving on day 2.
- FASTag covers NH44 tolls; keep some cash as backup.
- Network coverage is reliable along the entire NH44 stretch.
- Book ahead during major festivals, especially the Chithirai Festival in April, when the city gets very crowded.
- Carry comfortable footwear, as temple complexes involve significant walking, much of it barefoot.
- If continuing to Rameswaram, confirm the extended itinerary and interstate-permit needs with your driver in advance.
