Route

How to reach Kodaikanal from Bengaluru by road

Via Hosur, Salem & Dindigul (NH44)

The main route runs south on NH44 through Hosur, Krishnagiri, Salem and Dindigul. From Dindigul, the road turns toward the Palani hills and climbs the Kodaikanal ghat road, gaining height quickly through pine forests and viewpoints before reaching the town.

Via Palani (alternative approach)

An alternative from Dindigul routes through Palani, known for its hilltop Murugan temple, before joining the ghat road up to Kodaikanal. This adds a short detour but lets pilgrims combine a temple visit with the hill-station leg.

Drive time

  • Drive time

    Detail
    9–10 hours
  • Suggested trip length

    Detail
    3 days

Given the 9–10 hour drive, leave Bengaluru by 5–5.30 am to reach Kodaikanal comfortably before dark. NH44 through Hosur, Salem and Dindigul carries steady highway traffic, and the final ghat climb from Dindigul demands slower, more careful driving.

Fuel up well before starting the ghat section, as stations thin out on the climb. Carry water and light snacks for the final hour, and if driving after dusk on the ghat road, keep speeds low given the sharp bends and occasional fog near the top.

Season

Best time to visit Kodaikanal

October to June works well for Kodaikanal, with the post-monsoon and winter months giving the clearest lake and valley views. Summer (April–May) is popular as an escape from the plains’ heat, since Kodaikanal stays notably cooler year-round.

The southwest monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rain to the Palani hills and can make the ghat road slippery, so many travellers avoid this window. Early mornings at the lake are pleasant almost any time of year the town is not in heavy mist.

Tips

Travel tips for a Kodaikanal road trip

  • A sedan suits couples or small families for a straight drive; groups will want an Ertiga, Innova Crysta or Tempo Traveller for the ghat comfort and luggage room.
  • Given the 9–10 hour drive, consider splitting the return into a more relaxed pace rather than pushing straight through.
  • Carry motion-sickness medication for the Kodaikanal ghat climb.
  • Pack warm layers — Kodaikanal evenings and mornings are cool through most of the year.
  • FASTag covers NH44 tolls; keep some cash as backup.
  • Network coverage is generally reliable along NH44 but can dip briefly on the ghat climb.
  • Book your vehicle a few days ahead for weekends and the April–May peak season.
  • If combining with a temple visit, factor in extra time for the Palani detour.
