Bangalore to Mangalore Road Trip Guide: Route, Stops & Itinerary
Mangalore blends a busy coastal city with easy access to beaches, seafood and nearby pilgrimage towns, making it one of the more versatile coastal drives from Bengaluru.
How to reach Mangalore from Bengaluru by road
Main route via NH75 (Hassan–Sakleshpur–Shiradi Ghat)
Bengaluru → Hassan → Sakleshpur → Shiradi Ghat → Bantwal → Mangaluru is the standard, most-used route, following NH75 through the Western Ghats. The ghat section has continuous curves for a stretch, so it is best driven in daylight at a steady pace.
Alternative via Charmadi Ghat
A quieter alternative diverts near Belur through Charmadi Ghat before rejoining the highway closer to Mangaluru, useful when Shiradi Ghat has heavy traffic or during maintenance closures.
Extending to Udupi or Dharmasthala
Mangaluru sits close to both Udupi and Dharmasthala, so many travellers use it as a base for a short loop covering temples, the coast and the city in a single extended trip.

Leaving Bengaluru by 6 am allows a comfortable arrival in Mangaluru by early afternoon. The road to Hassan is smooth highway; the pace slows through Sakleshpur and Shiradi Ghat, where curves and occasional truck traffic call for careful driving rather than speed. Fuel up in Hassan or Sakleshpur before the ghat stretch.
Shiradi Ghat is best driven in daylight, and with extra caution in the monsoon when the road can be slick and landslide-prone in patches. Carry water and light snacks for the ghat section since stopping points are limited, and plan the return leg with a similar daylight buffer if driving back the same day.
Best time to visit Mangalore
October to March is the most comfortable period, with dry ghat roads, pleasant coastal temperatures and calmer seas for beach visits. This period also suits business travel well, since road conditions are predictable and drive times stay consistent.
Summer (April–May) is hot and humid in the city, with beach visits better suited to early morning or evening. The monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rain to the ghat section and rough seas along the coast, so plan extra travel time and avoid swimming during this period.

- Dress modestly at temples like Kadri Manjunath; footwear is removed at the entrance.
- Keep FASTag active for NH75 tolls, with cash as a fallback.
- Expect brief network gaps within Shiradi Ghat.
- Book hotels ahead for weekends, since the city sees steady leisure and business travel together.
- Carry a light jacket for early ghat driving even outside winter months.
