Bangalore to Kabini Road Trip Guide: Route, Stops & Itinerary
Backwaters, resort stays and Nagarhole safaris make Kabini Bengaluru’s favourite wildlife weekend getaway.
How to reach Kabini from Bengaluru by road
Via NH275 to Mysuru, then Nanjangud and HD Kote (main route)
The route follows the NH275 expressway to Mysuru, then continues via Nanjangud and HD Kote towards the Kabini backwaters and Karapura zone. Roads are good up to Mysuru and reasonable, though narrower, on the final HD Kote stretch.
Via Mysuru–Bandipur road (alternative, for Nagarhole side)
Some resorts on the Nagarhole side of the reservoir are reached via a road that also connects towards Bandipur, useful if combining Kabini with a Bandipur or Wayanad leg on the same trip.

Leaving Bengaluru by 7–8 am allows a comfortable arrival by early afternoon, in time to settle in before an evening safari or boat ride. The expressway to Mysuru has toll plazas; keep FASTag active.
The final approach through HD Kote and towards resort zones passes through forest-fringe areas, so drive cautiously at dusk when wildlife can be near the road; there is no blanket night-driving ban on this particular stretch, but slower, careful driving is advisable after dark. Fuel up at Mysuru or Nanjangud, since options near Kabini itself are limited.
Best time to visit Kabini
October to May is the recommended season for wildlife sightings at Nagarhole, with drier conditions bringing animals closer to waterholes; December to February adds cooler, more comfortable weather for safaris.
The monsoon months (June–September) see the reservoir at its fullest, making for a scenic backwater stay, though safari access can be more limited and sightings less frequent during heavy rain.
| Season | Months | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Winter | Dec–Feb | Best; cool, comfortable safaris |
| Summer | Mar–May | Good sightings near waterholes |
| Monsoon | Jun–Sep | Full backwaters; safaris more limited |

Travel tips for a Kabini road trip
- An Innova Crysta or Ertiga suits most family groups; larger groups can use a Tempo Traveller.
- The route has no ghat sections, though the final stretch is narrower, so travel at a moderate pace.
- Safari and boat cruise bookings at Nagarhole are separate from the cab and best reserved in advance through your resort.
- This is an intrastate Karnataka trip, so no interstate permit is required.
- Carry cash for local purchases near HD Kote, where card acceptance is limited.
- Network coverage weakens noticeably near the resort zone and inside the forest; inform family in advance.
- Pack light neutral-coloured clothing for safaris, and carry insect repellent.
- Book your resort and cab well ahead for weekends and the peak winter season.
