Route

How to reach Shivanasamudra from Bengaluru by road

Via NH275 and Malavalli (main route)

From Bengaluru, take the NH275 expressway towards Mysuru up to Maddur, then branch off through Malavalli towards Shivanasamudra. The state highway stretch after Maddur is narrower than the expressway but generally in reasonable condition.

Via Kanakapura Road (alternative)

A quieter alternative runs via Kanakapura Road towards Malavalli, avoiding the busier expressway traffic near Ramanagara and Channapatna, though it is a somewhat longer and slower drive overall.

Start early on weekends since the falls viewpoints get crowded by mid-morning during peak monsoon months. The expressway portion up to Maddur has toll plazas; keep FASTag active.

The final stretch to the falls is a state highway with lighter traffic and no ghat sections, so there are no night-driving restrictions. Fuel and food options thin out after Maddur, so top up and eat before branching off towards Malavalli.

Season

Best time to visit Shivanasamudra

July to September, during and just after the monsoon, is when both waterfalls are at their fullest and most dramatic, making this the single best window to visit. Views can be hazy in heavy rain, so a break in the showers gives the clearest photographs.

October to February offers a drier, greener landscape with a gentler flow of water, still scenic but less powerful than monsoon season. Summer (March–June) sees the falls reduced to a trickle or dry in parts, so it is not recommended for this specific trip.

Tips

Travel tips for a Shivanasamudra road trip

  • A sedan works fine for small groups; families with more members are more comfortable in an Ertiga or Innova Crysta.
  • There are no ghat sections on this route, so motion sickness is rarely an issue.
  • Stay well behind railings at the falls viewpoints; rocks can be slippery, especially after rain.
  • This is an intrastate Karnataka trip, so no interstate permit is required.
  • Keep FASTag ready for the expressway tolls up to Maddur; carry some cash as backup after that.
  • Network coverage can weaken slightly near the falls; download offline maps in advance.
  • Visit soon after a spell of good rain in July–September for the fullest flow.
  • Book your cab a few days ahead for monsoon weekends when the falls draw the biggest crowds.
