Bangalore to Kodachadri Road Trip Guide: Route, Stops & Itinerary
Kodachadri, a Western Ghats peak near the Mookambika sanctuary, is a rewarding but long trekking trip from Bengaluru. Here’s how to plan the drive and the climb.
How to reach Kodachadri from Bengaluru by road
Via Shivamogga & Hosanagara (recommended)
From Bengaluru, the route runs through Tumakuru and Shivamogga before continuing via Hosanagara towards Nittur, the usual base village for the Kodachadri trek. Roads are good highway until Shivamogga, then narrower state roads through forested hill terrain for the final stretch.
Via Kollur (coastal approach)
Travellers combining Kodachadri with a Mookambika Temple visit at Kollur can approach from the coastal side, driving via Shivamogga and Hosanagara or via the Someshwara ghat sections. This route ties in well if you plan to stay near Kollur before or after the trek.

Given the distance, an early start — by 5 or 6 am — is important to reach the trek base with enough daylight left, or to break the journey overnight near Shivamogga. The highway to Shivamogga is fast; the last stretch through forested hill roads to Nittur is slower and winding.
Some approach roads pass through reserve-forest sections where night driving is discouraged for safety and wildlife-movement reasons, so plan to complete the final stretch before dark. Fuel up well before Hosanagara, as options are limited closer to the trek base.
Best time to visit Kodachadri
October to February is the best window, with dry trails, clear views from the summit and comfortable trekking temperatures. This is when most organised treks to Kodachadri run.
The monsoon (June–September) turns the region intensely green with waterfalls in full flow, but the trek itself becomes slippery and is often discouraged during heavy rain, so it’s better suited to viewing from a distance than climbing.
| Season | Months | What to expect |

| Winter | Oct–Feb | Best for the trek — dry trails, clear summit views |
| Monsoon | Jun–Sep | Lush and scenic, but the trek is often unsafe |

Travel tips for a Kodachadri road trip
- Given the distance, consider an SUV or tempo traveller for larger groups over long hours on the road.
- Wear proper trekking shoes and carry water — the climb to the peak is strenuous in parts.
- Arrange local jeeps and guides at Nittur in advance during peak trekking season.
- Network coverage is very limited near the trek base and along forest stretches.
- Keep FASTag active for highway tolls; carry cash for local arrangements at the base village.
- Given the long drive, consider splitting it with an overnight halt at Shivamogga if you’re not starting very early.
- Check trek permissions and conditions locally, as access can be restricted in poor weather.
