Route

How to reach Dandeli from Bengaluru by road

Via Tumakuru, Chitradurga & Hubballi (recommended)

The main route from Bengaluru runs on NH48 through Tumakuru, Chitradurga, Davangere and Hubballi–Dharwad before turning towards Dandeli. This stays on well-maintained national highway for most of the distance, making it the fastest option despite the length.

Via Shivamogga (alternative for combined trips)

Travellers wanting to combine Dandeli with Jog Falls or Agumbe can route via Shivamogga instead, joining up through the forested Western Ghats belt, though this adds time compared to the direct NH48 route.

Given the distance, a very early start — by 5 am — or splitting the journey with an overnight halt near Hubballi is advisable. The NH48 stretch is fast and well-maintained, making most of the long distance manageable within daylight hours if you start early.

The final approach into Dandeli passes through forested sanctuary areas where driving after dark is best avoided due to limited visibility and occasional wildlife movement. Fuel up at Hubballi–Dharwad before the last stretch, as options are limited closer to Dandeli.

Season

Best time to visit Dandeli

October to May is the broad window for visiting, with rafting operators typically running trips after the monsoon recedes through to early summer, and wildlife sightings generally better in the drier months.

The monsoon (June–September) swells the Kali River, which usually pauses rafting operations for safety, though the forest turns dramatically green — better suited to a nature drive than water activities during this period.
